Sarah Butler is Executive Director at Shark Island Kangaroo Valley. She is also a theatre maker, as well as co-founder and Artistic Director of The ARTSLAB – a program of new films, music, theatre and conversations, that runs through the year in the valley.
Sarah has been performing and making theatre, as a director, producer, designer and writer for over 30 years, with an emphasis on new work in non-traditional performance spaces. She has a BA in Drama from the University of NSW and a Master of Education in Creative Arts from UTS.
In Sydney during the 80s and 90s and then from Kangaroo Valley since 2005, she has worked as an actor; written, devised and adapted stories for theatre; taught drama to young people and directed and designed theatre productions for youth and community. More >
Most recently, Sarah co-wrote and co-directed the award-winning play The Twins which toured the eastern states in 2021, and will premiere her new play Safety Nets at the 2022 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Before joining the Shark Island team in 2014, her artistic pursuits were supported by a part-time career in community education, training and project management for both state and federal electoral commissions in Australia, including a three-month AusAID education project in Uganda.
Her work and studies reflect her commitment to storytelling and to art that challenges, provokes and moves people, as well as a belief that people and communities need and thrive on engaging intimately with the arts and artistic practice.
