THE HUNTING GROUND

In the United States the statistics are staggering. One in five women enrolled at university are sexually assaulted, yet only a fraction of these crimes are reported.

SYNOPSIS

(USA) 2015.

THE HUNTING GROUND premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and was part of Good Pitch Australia 2015. A critically acclaimed feature documentary that chronicles the personal stories of students who have been sexually assaulted on American university campuses.

Interweaving observational footage, expert insights and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors pursuing both their education and justice in the face of institutional failure to respond effectively and appropriately to their reports.

Shark Island Institute implemented the Australian outreach campaign with a group of stakeholders, screening the film, providing materials and resulting in the 2017 Australian Human Rights Commission national survey regarding prevalence of assault at Australian universities, a national report on those survey results, and the comparative research report ‘On Safe Ground’ providing a good practice guide for universities. Shark Island Foundation created and funded The Hunting Ground Australia project through its Good Pitch Australia initiative.
