Sarah Butler is Manager at Shark Island Institute in Kangaroo Valley. She is also a theatre maker and Co-Founder/Artistic Director of The ARTSLAB — a program of film, music, theatre and conversations at the Upper River Hall Kangaroo Valley.
Sarah has been performing and making theatre, with an emphasis on new work in non-traditional performance spaces, for over 30 years — as a producer, director, designer, writer and performer. Sarah has a BA in Drama from the University of NSW and a Master of Education in Creative Arts from UTS. In Sydney during the 80s and 90s and then in Kangaroo Valley since 2005, she has worked as an actor; written, devised and adapted stories for theatre; taught drama to young people and directed and designed theatre productions for youth and community. She is currently writing a hybrid theatre/film work for production in 2018.
Before joining the Shark Island team in 2014, her artistic pursuits were supported by a part-time career in community education, training and project management for both state and federal electoral commissions in Australia, including a three-month AusAID education project in Uganda.
Her work and studies reflect her commitment to storytelling and to art that challenges, provokes, and moves people, as well as a belief that people and communities need and thrive on engaging intimately with the arts and artistic practice.
