SYNOPSIS
SAVING TUVALU tells the story of a community at the frontline line of the climate crisis and the race to upload the nation to the metaverse. At the heart of our story is Kato, a softly spoken storyteller on a mission to record how the last generation of children born on Tuvalu feel about their future.
One of these young people is 10-year-old Lily; climate anxiety simmers below the surface of her everyday life as she navigates a world of contrasts — a paradise on the brink of extinction. Meanwhile, scientists are busy creating LiDar scans of the landscape and preserving customs with motion capture technology. The ‘digital nation’ emerges as a beacon of survival and the promise of permanence, but can a nation truly be saved in the metaverse?
And should Tuvaluans stay and fight for their homeland, or leave while it’s safe to do so? When a devastating king tide hits the island, Kato, Lily, and their fellow Tuvaluans are confronted with the impossible choice of whether to stay or leave.
SAVING TUVALU is an urgent story about the greatest challenge of our time — what is happening there is coming for us all.
