Philippa Bateman

Philippa Bateman’s career spans spans documentary, feature film, television, long form non-fiction, and screen-based media arts. She is a writer and filmmaker with 25+ years experience in specialty feature film in Australia, the US and UK. She has worked as a senior executive for independent production companies, the AFC (now Screen Australia) and as a producer has had deals with US studios Universal and United Artists/MGM.

Philippa established Enigma Machine in 2010 to develop her own projects and work with like-minded partners. She has had the good fortune to work with the Shark Island team since 2015 on Good Pitch Australia and as a Mentor for The Shark Island Story, Development and Impact Lab. In 2019, she was a recipient of the Documentary Australia/Create NSW SHE DOC Fellowship and ‘embedded’ at Alex Gibney’s company Jigsaw in New York.

In a former life, Philippa was CEO and co-owner of award-winning independent production company April Films which financed, produced and marketed the critically acclaimed feature film Jindabyne starring Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne (director Ray Lawrence). Premiering at Cannes Film Festival in Director’s Fortnight, the film sold to Sony Classics in the US and was nominated for 9 AFI awards, including April Films for Best Film. April Films won the SPAA Independent Producer’s Award (2006).

She is currently producing and directing WASH MY SOUL IN THE RIVER’S FLOW, an Enigma Machine Production in association with Shark Island Productions.

A child of the cinema (long story), she never imagined that all those years of getting ghostly in dark rooms and losing her religion at the BFI Library would land her the dream gig: Curator, CINEMANIA at Shark Island.

Philippa has a degree in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Sydney.
